If we only talk about modern board games, in high schools I started playing Magic: The Gathering which was my favorite game until my early thirties. I remember my first encounter with board games when I was 8 years old.
It was — surprise, surprise! I did find it interesting at that time, as long as there were people to play with and they were not adults. I remember that I felt like this was the best game in the world. But my real appreciation for games came many years later, when I discovered Role Playing Games. Until now I believe they are one of the best genre of games ever. My interest in board games and card games came quite late, when I already had a steady job and believe it or not, when I had not so much time to spare.
It was when a friend of mine challenged me to design my own game. It started a joke, then as a hobby and one thing let to another… and since I am doing this for a living.

Actually I have never had any desire designing games. I love to play them, losing and winning and I have a great admiration for the modern board games artwork, but designing? Not really. What really happened here was that after certain number of game plays, I started seeing all the flaws together with the positive sides of the games. This led me to house ruling most games from my collection and later on to see what I would like to add to them in terms of mechanics, ergonomy etc.
I have to say that I do not like to calculate results and optimal actions while playing, so for me game design is more about out of the box thinking than just a mathematical model.

Making a game is a very creative and fulfilling process. The moment I realized that we were able to transcend the idea into a real physical game I would dive in without hesitation. I agree with Andrei that we have complementary skills, he does all the math and I can play with the connections and relations between individual parts of the game.
How long does it take you to develop the first version of a game? And how long until you have a finished version ready? Making the first version is usually the most difficult task.

The final version depends on a lot of factors. The most important items I need to finalize a game are ideas. They come from game developers, play-testers, friends or even myself :. Sometimes an author gets lucky enough to have great material and thats why i gave it 4 stars otherwise it'd be 2 stars. Consider it a synopsis of process work and don't read it for enjoyment but for the pleasure of understanding a complex subject in simple terms.
